It’s every vegan’s worst nightmare: tucking into an apparently-meat free snack only to discover you’ve been eating hoisin duck, or any duck for that matter, the whole time.
That’s what happened to Isobel Lentaigne when she ate was what labelled as a vegan falafel wrap from Sainsbury’s.
What’s worse, the 21-year-old had been attending a vegan demonstration in Bristol city centre at the time.
It was when she went to the pub afterward that she realised what she had been eating.
The second-year fine arts student saw that the falafel wrap had been wrongly mixed with hoisin duck in the factory prior to it being dispatched to the Sainbury’s branch.
She told the Bristol Post:
I feel sick. I had been taking part in the Anonymous for the Voiceless demonstration in town all day while I ate this wrap without realising what was in it.
I ate half of it during the day and then put it in my bag. It was only when I got to the pub and actually looked at it that I realised.
Everyone said it was meat. I think it’s hoisin, based on the smell. I have been vegan for four and a half years and I am shocked.
She added:
I have eaten meat and the very thought of meat makes me sick. I don’t see it as meat – I see it as part of an animal that has suffered, and I have now got those parts inside of me.
The fact I bought this with a clear label stating it was suitable for vegans and vegetarians and I trusted Sainsbury’s only to then find actual meat in my wrap, it’s really bad.
A Sainbury’s spokesperson told the Mirror:
We’re investigating with our supplier and would like to offer our apologies to Isobel.
It hasn’t been the greatest month for vegans. Just last week, video of a Toronto restaurant owner cutting a steak in front of vegan protestors went viral and business is now booming for the chef.
The activists returned to Toronto’s Antler restaurant last week in order to create a dialogue with the owner, and were met with one counter-protestor, a friend of the restauranteur, holding a sign reading ‘self righteous pr***s’.
Marni Ugar who led the activists and has revealed there is now a longer waiting list for table reservations says she has noticed the restaurant is busier than before their protest went viral.
Speaking to UNILAD, Marni said:
If he wanted us to go away, he could sit down and have dialogue but instead he’s not returning my emails.
How I feel is, it doesn’t actually bother me that business is booming for him because my bottom line is how many animals are dying.
The people that sit at his restaurant just take business from somewhere else. These are people who would consume a dead animal, and they’re just doing it there now, so that’s fine. I do find it interesting that everyone is going nuts saying I’m impacting his business.
2018 continues to be one of the most unpredictable years in recent time.
